Agriculture recovery project for the war affected communities of North Shewa Zone, Amhara Region, Ethiopia

Abstract

Farmers in the North Shewa zone of Amhara Regional State heavily depends on mixed agriculture for their livelihoods. The war has caused tremendous damages and losses to the productive assets and supportive agricultural infrastructures and makes the community vulnerable to food insecurity. It has aggravated the socio-economic conditions of the population. To curve the situation and improve the livelihood of affected communities a recovery projects have been designed. The project is expected to contribute for the recovery and improvement of food and nutrition security through the restoration of productive assets, agricultural infrastructures and capacity building of affected communities and their institutions. The project will focus on the nine war affected districts and communities of North Shewa zone. The potential target groups will comprise about 10,000 households which directly or indirectly affected by the conflict. The project comprised different components: recovery and improvement of crop and livestock production by promoting relevant packages that include inputs and technical capacity building, restoration of assets and infrastructures with their facilities. Support will be provided to fill in some of the identified gaps and strengthen the beneficiary households and institutions. The project is expected to be funded by the government, non-government organizations. In addition the beneficiaries are also expected to contribute in cash or kind (such as labour contribution). An estimated amount of about 4,186,537,224 Ethiopian Birr is required for the three years life time of the project.
