Abstract:
The aim of this research was to assess the Relationship between Parents’ Attitude and Self
Esteem of Children with Visual Impairment. Data were collected from 101 children with
visual impairment and their parents. The study employed quantitative research approach.
Three stage sampling technique was used. The quantitative data were collected using
questionnaires: Demographic question, Rosenberg self-esteem scale and index of parental
attitude. Data from the quantitative survey were analyzed using, mean, standard deviation,
correlation, and independent sample t- test. The result indicated that, there was no significant
difference between gender of children and residence opportunity on self-esteem of children
with visual impairment. Whereas, there is significant difference between age group with self
esteem of CwVI, In addition to this, there is significant positive relationship between parental
attitude and self-esteem of CwVI. The study also found that children with visual impairment
had low self-esteem and parents had negative attitude towards their children as a result of
their impairment. Based on the result, the researcher recommended that, government, care
givers, teachers, ECD-CE experts need to provide training for parents to alter their attitude,
how to treat, and care and support children with visual impairment to enhance their level of
self-esteem.
