Abstract:
The aim of this study was to analyses determinants of smallholder farmers' choice of adoption of agroforestry (AF) technologies in Tarmaber Woreda. Data were collected from primary and secondary sources. A total of 96 households were selected using simple randomly sampling technique. Inferential and descriptive statistics were used to analyze the data. Descriptive statistical techniques were used to analyze household characteristics of the respondents’. The Chi-square test was used to test the statistical significance of systematic association with each dummy independent variable and t-test was used to test the statistical significance difference with each continuous independent variable. Binary logistic regression model was used to analyze the determinants of AF technologies adoption. Both the adopters and non-adopters have positive attitude towards the importance of the AF technologies. According to being implemented AF technologies the result revealed that farm land boundary tree planting (83.93% households) and on farm tree planting (69.64% households) are the most widely adopted AF technologies. The major contributions of AF are source of diversified product (22 %) followed by Soil fertility enhanced (21 %) of the respondents. While the least contributions are mitigating climate change (4 % of the respondents) followed by conservation of biodiversity (4 % of the respondents). The analysis of binary logistic regression model revealed
that marital status , local bylaws, educational level and extension service were positively and significantly related to farmers’ adoption decision of AF technologies at p=0.05 level. Similarly, family size was positively and significantly related to farmers’ adoption decision of AF technologies at p=0.01 level. While landholding size was positively and significantly related to farmers’ adoption decision of AF technologies at p=0.1 level. The study recommended that adoption of AF technologies is important to address the continuous depletion of forest resources and also improve the livelihood of local communities.
